Not Quite Designed is a Minecraft map I made with my very good friend Kronosta. He has a channel on YouTube, you should check it out he makes very cool 4D art/music!
This is a non Euclidean map that uses the immersive portals mod. It started as a small library maze, but then we grew it until it became a complete puzzle map! Well, mostly just a decorated maze. Anyway it's 1.20.1 and only needs one mod (two if you count Fabric API) so if it interests you, check it out!

The rest of this page will be explaining how we built it. It starts pretty simply, with these 8x8 template cells we designed. Then using world edit, we copied and pasted these cells to form a grid, and using immersive portals we made the tiling a bit more inconsistent than {4, 4}. We also merge neighboring cells sometimes, or add hallways to break up the motonony of the repeating rooms. Lastly, we decorated each room to really break the repetition.
By far the most challenging section to make was the sewers. The sewers had water in them and the water would spill out into the world and mess up portals, I'd have to make a dam and then break it again, and then do a weird thing with water to make it seamless at the portal boundary. And that's another challenge, is that lighting gets weird near portals since it doesn't spread through them. Often times I'd have to count how many blocks away a light source is from a portal, then go to the other side of the portal, go behind it that many blocks, and place the same light source, so that everything was seamless.
I used a really cool mod the whole time called effortless building, and it's honestly the only reason any of this was possible in two days. Go check it out, NOW!
I really enjoyed writing the lore element in the lectern in the library. The idea behind it was that, as this is some cursed structure forged by an intelligent entity that doesn't understand humans nor 3D space, it feels the same as the buildings. Ie it wanders around aimlessly, loops back on itself, defies logic and ultimately is without intention. Or at least, that was the goal, it mostly turned out hilarious. Oh well :P
Yeah uhh go play it ig
